We've been traveling around a bit lately. No weekly tutor sessions and a middle school baseball schedule that is a lot less time consuming than WR Baseball has allowed for more flexibility. Yay!
I took the boys down to the Legislative Building last month, not really because I wanted to but because we needed to meet with senators about a particular bad idea. A few had proposed a bill that would require all NC children to be on the same vaccination schedule and mandatory flu shots. I will spare you the details about my experiences when Sawyer was a baby but the bottom line is this a very slippery slope. There's no one size fits all for medical care and quite honestly, I don't trust elected officials to decide what's best for my kids. Anyway, I thought it would be good (and educational) to take the boys and let our voices be heard. Jackson didn't want to go but Sawyer begged him and he obliged. I feel certain that he wanted to avoid any kind of confrontation and embarrassment, being the 13-year-old that he is:-) I don't think he was embarrassed except once and I think he and I both learned a lot about the process. It opened my eyes to a lot of things, good and bad. We met with a few very kind senators and I believe that our stories impacted them. Many who we talked to ended up opposing the bill. Maybe that day trip will serve as an example to the boys are about the power to create change and stand for our freedoms that their grandfathers and uncle fought to protect.
The boys and I took a day trip to Troy recently. A stray pup showed up on Granddaddy's doorstep and we all were eager to meet her. Well, long story short she's back in Raleigh living between our house and Granddaddy's. She's really sweet and gets along with the rest of the pack. As I type, she's inside with Poppi, staying dry. Just call us "the ark". We seem to be good with taking in
pairs of 2:-)
We took a few days off of school last week and headed to the beach. Despite the cold water, the boys still jumped in. They also found some creative beach activities to keep themselves entertained. The clouds started to roll in one day so we headed to the southern end of the island and walked the concrete wall that goes over to Zeke's Island. Sawyer and I made it about 3/4 of the way, when the walk got treacherous. Jackson and Garrett made it all the way over to the island. They came back with two hermit crabs; we did not bring those back to Raleigh with us. Another highlight of the trip was our first visit to the new donut shop there on the island. OH MY GOODNESS! I don't even have a donut weakness but I think that Wake N Bake Donuts could make me acquire one.
