Things I've Learned

October left us and November is slipping by quickly.  Thanksgiving is this week and the Christmas decorations are up.  I always get the urge before Thanksgiving to decorate and I figured I better not put it off like last year.  It is much easier for me to do things that I don't feel obligated to do.

I've figured out a lot of the things in the past few weeks.  I want these things documented so that I can look back when I need reminders.  Here they are:

Kids are very resilient.  Sawyer recently fell and cut his chin and Bennett more recently fell and cut his head.  Both were bloody messes but both cuts are healing well without stitches.  In addition, Sawyer has several scrapes on his face.  I know he fell at least three times within one morning last week but he is fine.  God knew what he was doing when he made those hard heads:-)

Halloween is a lot of work, especially when ordered costumes don't arrive on time due to a  hurricane in the Northeast.   The payout is worth it though.  Webb and I raided both Jackson's and Sawyer's bags.
(Sawyer in the costume that Jackson wore when he was two.  Jackson is in a creepy, glowing, skeleton costume that took hours to find because the pickens are slim on October 31st.  Thank goodness for Webb and a long lunch break.  Jackson's original choice, an Annoying Orange costume, arrived on November 1st, thanks to Hurricane Sandy.)

Election results can make one depressed for days.  I'm so glad that I can look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas.  More importantly, I am glad that my HOPE is in Jesus.

Some toddlers prefer to wear Crocs all season, refusing to wear socks, regardless of the temperatures.  He won't even wear his new pair of Stride Rites. Crocs rule!
(It's cold but he refuses to wear socks with these shoes)

Boys say, "huh" when you tell them something for several reasons: a. They hope that you will give them a different answer.  b. They want you to elaborate more on the answer.  c. They were not listening in the first place.

Children are like caterpillars.  Given time and patience, they will eventually develop wings for flight. For years, I trusted that Jackson's reading would one day take flight.  I doubted that Jackson was one of those bookworms; Webb and I aren't ones who feel the urge to sit around and read all day.  However, Jackson has completed three chapter books since September.  THIS IS HUGE!  We are thankful that we haven't worried too much and thankful that we didn't push too much.  This was all part of the timing.  Things have finally clicked and Jackson is overcoming dyslexia! Praise the Lord!

I'm not sure that I'll ever get a good night's sleep again....maybe when my babies are married and have babies of their own?  Just maybe;-)

Kids are good finders of things that you hide from them and yourself.
(He found the lollipops that I hid from both of us)
I'm still trying to master the concept of living in the moment.  Just when I think I've got it, I realize that I'm fretting over dirty laundry and floors that need to be vacuumed.  The good news is as soon as I forget, I have a toddler that says, "hold you, mommy" and then I am reminded that the "to do" list can be done at another time when little boys aren't begging for my attention.

And last, I've learned that I am indecisive but if I follow my heart, things usually work out.  Our kitchen is finished, aside from a few touch-ups, and I couldn't be more pleased.  This was a project that we started back in the spring.  I had more than enough time to make decisions, that's for sure.  I doubted myself so many times and I spent way too many nights online researching counter-tops.  In the end, it all came together and Webb and I are still happily married.
(My treasured sugar canister and grease canister that Granny gave me)
(Our new front apron sink.  Sawyer has already bathed in it twice.  We all love this sink.)

(My new induction cooktop.  I am really enjoying cooking with this.  It boils water faster than the microwave but is cool to touch so I don't worry about the boys when they are "helping" me cook.)

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our family and friends!  We are very thankful for each of you.  Tomorrow night, we will kickoff Thanksgiving activities with my family.   We will spend time with  Webb's parents later this week.  Despite all of the current events and unsettling times, I am counting bountiful blessings this year.
